Okay, Benni might have a sense of honor, but I should think he would have gotten the idea that refusing to eat food offered to him might be considered a sign of rudeness.
It’s certainly going to take Benni a long time to get used to thinking of getting something without “paying” for it.
More than just the few days we’ve seen him go through so far.
i think his stomach just isn’t used to that much food anymore. i mean he is practically just skin and bones… if you don’t eat much for a long time, you simply can’t eat a lot more again even if it is free. your stomach can’t handle it and you would puke. 😛
Boy! It looks like Benni suffered all forms of abuse, sexual, physical and food deprivation. I had been wondering why he was so skinny, even for an otter. During his entire time in the comic, whenever you saw him without his shirt on, you could see his ribs.
Is he, though? Looking at the plates around the table, Benni’s looks like it’s been licked clean while the others show at least some measure of debris left. And while we can only see the side of Benni’s face, that’s a forlorn look if I’ve ever seen one. He likely has enough room for more food, but years of conditioning are holding him back.
Maybe, but I doubt that he has room for that much more, after his body has become used to eating so little. I would guess that he has room for maybe one or two tacos, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he only has enough for half, if that.
Heck, I think it’s possible that the reason he’s so forlorn is because he wants to be able to chow down, like – and with – the others, but knows (probably from experience) that he can’t. =(
It’s not what many of you think. With a limited diet, Benni’s stomach just can’t hold all that much. He’s physically acclimated to small amounts, and with that it’s going to take a while to get him to the point he’s eating a normal amount for a cub his age. Otherwise, he WILL get sick and most likely a severe case of the trots…
If I recall correctly, in the grocery store scene with Flora, Benni clearly was after some sweets. And I should think Colin would already know about any dietary restrictions Benni would have from asking any doctors who have dealt with him. I don’t get the idea that Colin is supposed to be stupid.
It’s not about dietary restrictions. It’s about the amount of food. If you don’t eat much for a long time, you just can’t eat so much at once. Your stomach can’t handle it, because it’s not used to the amount of food.
I remember having to study the liberation of camps in WWII for a class that I took in the Army. There were such cases of malnutrition and starvation that even a little food that was too rich for many of the prisoners was fatal. Gods…talk about heartbreaking.
I don’t think his stomach is too small for a good portion of food, the people he used to ‘work’ for that were grooming him gave him plenty, I think it’s mostly that he hardly got any with his dad, had to scrounge or bully for food at school, and is so pathetically grateful for everything he’s been getting that he’s trying to make sure everyone else that he’s _really_ grateful for being his friend has enough.
Well then Colin can do what any dad would do in such a situation and sit up all night with a sick kid, telling Benni how he’s sorry for not listening to him, and for turning our poor rudderbutt into a firebutt.
Maybe Kaleb is going to make a big belch from the soda.
I am reminded of a “Calvin and Hobbes” comic where Calvin tells Hobbes how he sees people drinking soda out a bottle with the idea of looking glamorous. Calvin does the same and belches loudly afterward. Hobbes says, “Evidently a little license on Madison Avenue’s part.” and Calvin replies, “Phoo! Right up my nose!”

My only complaint is there strip keeps making me wait for more story ?. I wish it updated more often
Campy’s attention to detail is amazing. After you are looking at everyone’s fun expressions and body details. The backgrounds are vary neat and detailed. The cabinets, popcorn celine, and the dinner table is fantastic! A huge improvement from the early strips. Thank you for all of your hard work Campion!
Oh, they very much existed, but they were highly regional. Baja inspired Mexican food joints started popping up in the San Diego/Los Angeles region in the early 90’s.

Taco night. I have a feeling this is going to lead to him being ashamed of incontinence.

Actually at the Doctor’s office he looked more or less normal.
I think we can chalk that up to the improvements Campion has made right along.
Yes, I bet his father never fed him well. His ribs are visbile which can easily happen if underfed.
Seems Colin does not know how to listen. Benni is trying to tell him something but he keeps talking over him.

that’s what i already said 😛

It’s called refeeding syndrome. And yes, it is heartbreaking.

Indeed you did. Ah, the drawbacks of being on a phone and commenting as opposed to my computer where I can see everything!!!

Yup. Plus the fact Colin has a bottle of hot sauce next to him. That’s always a plus in my book.
But the backgrounds are really more involved! I love seeing the advancements artists make in their craft!!!
And the books Hunter is sitting on just to be able to see over the table.
As far as I know, there was no such thing as fish tacos at the time.
Oh, they very much existed, but they were highly regional. Baja inspired Mexican food joints started popping up in the San Diego/Los Angeles region in the early 90’s.
Keeping in mind that while the setting is very much in keeping with the 90s, it isn’t literally.
This is supposed to be long after the time of Man. Fish Tacos not being a Thing isn’t really a Thing. 😉
Says who? I remember a wall calendar at the car dealership Talitha;’s father had worked at showing “199-” with the last digit being hidden
Do not deny otters their fish. FEEEEESSH!!!
“Eat eat! How you gonna get a husband, you so thin!”
Seriously, though, whether he likes it or not, he doesn’t have to pay for having food, comfort, and just plain decency shown to him.
