It could have been lost any way like Flora states. I stand by Tanya has enough time still left in her life to grow and maybe forget this happened. Kids can do that, bad events at young teenage years can be erased from memories if left be and not constantly brought up. Tanya stands a chance of becoming a young adult who never recalls a horrible fight and grows up, feeling like she’s never had her first time robbed away. The mind is an amazing thing that can heal and grow a ton before we hit twenty-five. Tanya’s got the… Read more »
I don’t think being raped can be forgotten. There was talk years ago about “suppressed memories” of past traumatic events, but that was revealed to be nothing more than a myth. People with horrible experiences don’t forget them.
But in a happy supportive environment, (hopefully she won’t let it be something that weighs upon her, everyday). Some folk become defined by what bad or evil thing happened to them. And other furrsons face themselves, say, “yeah, that was really crappy. That was horrible to have to go through,” and let it be part of their past… I mean, Instead of daily dragging it around with them- burdened with the weight of the event- like Marley’s ghost, wrapped in those heavy chains that encumbered his every waking step! Woe! Woe!! Woe is me! Yes it will be part of… Read more »
I’ve known too many people who got sexually abused as kids and forgot it ever happened or grew up not remembering it. If suppression of it or your mind protecting you isn’t real then how do people, especially kids, just forget it and grow up fine or slightly damaged?
Perhaps these people really were not sexually abused. Remember the story about the MacMartin Preschool of California, where a woman claimed there was child sexual abuse and devil worshipping going on there and it was all a hoax? It turned out there were malicious prosecutors deliberately coaching the children to lie about being sexually abused when they never were.
Or perhaps you’ve not read up on how the mind works, or PTSD, or how easy it is for kids to erase or forget things that happen at young ages. Not to be rude, but it happens. People can push things into a locked box and never open it again. While yes, there’s inane things like ‘devil worshipping’ hoaxes, there’s plenty of real sexual assault cases and kids forget. It’s kind of a growing up thing usually, half our childhood fades into vague blurs and semi-sharp memories. If you look it up, I’m sure you’ll find some very nice reads… Read more »
Funny, I thought it was supposed to have been a discredited myth. Ever heard of subliminal messages, which were secret messages hidden in audio and video recording which supposedly put ideas into people’s minds and have them act unwillingly? They were definitely proven not to work.
Well, live and learn. A lot of people like to try and discredit the mind blocking things out. The brain’s a crazy thing. Kids forget a lot of abuse growing up then one day they actually realize it was abuse and they start examining it a lot.
Oh yeah, I know all the Devil Music myth stuff like rock telling kids to pray to Satan and stuff.
thread necro time cause I’m rereading this comic as therapy! I dissociated all of my childhood sexual abuse until I was older, and have had a dissociative disorder where I have no sense of self. I was diagnosed with childhood PTSD because of my symptoms even though I didn’t know why. later, upon reassociation in adulthood, I had my memories confirmed by a third party who witnessed some of it. Repression of trauma is perfectly real. I’m still reintegrating my memories, and it’s hell. Furthermore, people with dissociative identity disorder have been proven to create alters just so those alters… Read more »
Yeah, speaking from experience, just not MY experience. It was all forgotten for decades. And then there was a trigger, that caused the full remembering. And 25 years after remebering, – said person is still traumatized… Essentially a shadow person with little joy.
Yeah, all forgotten, but once remembered, a psyche shattered.
I know some people who have had that. They sort of freeze up and it’s just opened up suddenly. It expanded to one person who basically was fifteen when a big drugging and sexual assault happened, they remembered it for like three weeks, then one day it was gone and it took five plus years for them to remember it ever happened.
In order to protect itself, the mind builds walls and shuts doors with bad things behind them and we somehow keep going until one day we remember or if we’re ‘lucky’, we just keep going and never remember.
There are just so many ways to interpret that sigh in the last panel. Is Tanya depressed about the revelation that she’s not a virgin? Is she mentally exhausted and having difficulty piecing everything together? Does she agree with Flora that she’s more than that and is simply too tired to vocalize her agreement?
Also, I’m calling it now, I foresee Flora sharing the same story with Tanya that she did with Benni, to help her realize that things will continue and she’ll be alright.
Yeah, well, killing rape victims isn’t politically correct either. You either care about the victims or the victimizers, that’s what it comes down to. Pick a side and commit, folks, you don’t get to play both simultaneously. Fuck honor killings, and fuck those little bastards that ambushed Tanya. Come tomorrow morning in the story, everything for them is going to hell.
Yes, but it’s politically correct when other cultures do it. We’re not supposed to object to female circumcision, which, by the way, is a practice is some parts of Africa, but it has nothing to do with religion.

You’re a hero, Flora, plain and simple!

Good thing this is not an “honor-killing” culture”.
Such cultures deserve to be wiped out of existence, right off the face of their planet.
Oh, be careful, it’s CULTURAL IMPERIALISM! That’s not politically correct!

Just goes to show how little regard and respect we as a society actually have for the rights of women.
Of course. That’s why we practice female circumcision in the good old USA.
Yes I’m being sarcastic.
