Not entirely accurate. Humanity’s closest living relatives, Pan paniscus, practice sex for stress relief, social bonding and apparently just fun. Sex in hominids appears to go quite a bit beyond just being for procreation not just in terms of cultural attitudes but also in biology.
True, sex can be for whatever you want, but as parents discussing sex with their children, they’d naturally try to keep things technically and the technical purpose for sex is procreation. Plus, I doubt most parents would want to discuss sex as recreation to kids their age; they’d probably be afraid of them having it, which, in this case, is a real concern considering some of their backgrounds.
My friend and I-since I’ve been given explicit permission to be honest with her girl- have discussed sex with her daughter and mentioned that it can be pleasurable and is sometimes done for fun when she was 8. Though we also stressed that sex can be good if done at the right time, with the right people, and right way but done wrong it can be bad and hurt someone so we want her to wait much longer before trying it so she has time to learn how to decide when the time is right and do it safely first.… Read more »
Benni and Tali’ are examples of what you get when you teach kids that sex can be fun/for pleasure. I’m pretty sure Colin and Flora want to avoid anymore of that at all costs.
In Benni’s case, it’s more like he raised to see sex as commerce; sex for him was a way to earn money or to be traded for things like food or privileges and not necessarily something he enjoyed or was taught to to enjoy.
Hmm. It’s interesting that Flora is telling Tanya to look for a fox and Kaleb to look for a rabbit mate even though she’s in a relationship with a fox. Of course, she may be trying to deflect Tanya from being afraid of sex since she was raped by a cat(?).
I’d say that’s the most likely case. Letting her know she’s not in any risk of getting pregnant from what happened, without derailing the discussion in a manner that makes her the center of unwanted attention.
I imagine the relationship is based on the idea of not having more kids, but for two people taking care of the ones they already had-and both of them already had had kids with their own species whose spouses died.
We were taught sex education in a Lutheran grade school, but it was about how our bodies worked, not sex in a larger sense.
At first I didn’t like Flora’s statement since it implied both a species and a sex that the kids would want to have sex with. But she did then explicitly say about pregnancy and it is true that the species and sex matter there. Though she did sort of exclude dating a trans person who can get pregnant (for me when talking about pregnancy and similar topics with kids I talk about a person with a vagina or penis or at least add a ‘usually’ in front of the statement so as not to explicitly exclude trans folks). Still it… Read more »
Oh just give the whole trans thing a rest. Transgenderism isn’t important to the story, so there’s no point shoehorning it into the story just for the sake of inclusion. These kids are far too damaged/young to be having transgenderism thrown into the mix on top of everything else. The story’s not inclusive to the trans community? I don’t give a damn if the storyline makes some people feel excluded because they don’t get mentioned by group. Diversity for the sake of diversity serves no point, it just ruins what could be otherwise good stories, because it requires wasting time… Read more »
If anyone wants to do a story about transgenderism, maybe it should be about fish a la Sherman’s Lagoon. Some species of fish transition from one gender to the other under certain circumstances, and male seahorses carry the young.
Mammals aren’t fish. And I’m damn tired of folks citing the biological evolution of certain species of fish to survive in adverse conditions, as proof positive that humans are capable of switching from one gender to another simply because they want to. It doesn’t work that way. Just like how we can’t regrow a lost limb like certain species of lizard.
That claim is nothing but bullshit, and has been medically proven as being bullshit. How? Gender reassignment surgery. Male-to-female and female-to-male. Intended to alter the physical structure to match the delusions of the mind. If gender is nothing more than a social construct and completely independent of physical sex, the surgeries being performed serve no legitimate purpose since female and woman aren’t supposed to be the same thing. But since a man who identifies as female wants to look like a woman and will have his body mutilated to match his mindset, that means gender and sex are truly linked… Read more »
Gender reassignment surgery is poorly named. It should really be called sex reassignment surgery, because the person’s sex is the only thing being changed. And the purpose of the surgery is to make a person’s sex match their gender, because not all trans people are content with stopping at social transitioning. And that last sentence is riddled with conflation of terms, emotionally loaded language, misgendering, hyperbole, and a leap in logic. I’m just gonna… Since a male who identifies as a woman wants to look like a woman and will have her body altered to match her identity, that indicates… Read more »
That’s just all the more reason to exclude ANY mention of trans to the kids in this comic. They’ve got enough crap to sort through without having that headache thrown into the mix.
Trying to explains the supposed intricacies of transgenderism to them would be like explaining that while yes means yes and no means no generally, there are certain circumstances where yes actually means no and should be treated as such.
Probably with amused giggles, curiosity, wonder, etc.
I predict that, within a few pages, the subject of boners is going to come up, with at least some of the kits wondering just how big they can get. There’s bound to be questions about a live demonstration of an erection occurring. Whether or not they get such a demonstration is another matter entirely.
I was thinking that, but looking back they said they wouldn’t be using that book until later. The book their using now is the clean more standard sex ed book if I understand correctly.

just noticed hunger and tali are on the opposite sides of the kid line, likely intentionally to keep them apart? Though really that’s a subject they should stop avoiding. They really need to put those two kits together and explain to tali why what she did upset Hunter and that she can’t force herself on kids. Then get Tali to appologize to him. That would both start teaching Tali boundaries she badly needs better, and help hunter to not feel like his needs are being ignored. Tali wasn’t trying to be mean, and once Hunter knows that he may feel… Read more »
Maybe. But as Hunter said previously, he doesn’t really like being around her. Forcing them to sit together is just going to cause discomfort that isn’t needed right now. They can be sorted out later on at a more opportune time, rather than trying to cram everything into one night.
Heh, Bennie’s question… Probably worried about Talitha now.
Tanya’s certainly eager to get into knowing more, though she’s not so good at hiding it. I’m not sure this isn’t a little compensation for wanting to know more about the mechanics of what happened to her, but I feel her interest is a healthy thing regardless..
I am reminded of a “Calvin And Hobbes” comic where Calvin asks his father how people make babies. His father tells him that most people go to Sears, buy the kit, and follow the assembly instructions. Calvin asks in horror, “I come from SEARS?” The father replies, “No, you were a blue light special at Kmart. Almost as good and a whole lot cheaper.” Calvin screams, and the mother asks, “Dear, what are you telling Calvin NOW?”
For some reason my little brother (11 years younger) decided at age 6 to ask ME that particular question (rather than our parents or our older brother)… I gave him the Calvin & Hobbes answer.
He told on me. >_<

The purpose for sex is whatever purpose the people having it give it. That COULD just be pleasure, or bonding, or stress relief, or exercise.
not in most households…. it’s taught that sex is for procreation, not pleasure.
The natural purpose is for creating offspring.
Sure, Sex is also for having fun nowadays, stressrelief and so on.
But this is not the impression you want to give those kids.
They will learn that by themselves. Now they need to learn the basics.
And from what happened to them.. Basics are currently far more important to understand.
Not entirely accurate. Humanity’s closest living relatives, Pan paniscus, practice sex for stress relief, social bonding and apparently just fun. Sex in hominids appears to go quite a bit beyond just being for procreation not just in terms of cultural attitudes but also in biology.

That’s a weird perspective to have on sex trafficking victims.
But in Bennies case; accurate.
Is that a nervous titter coming from Tanya?

If anyone wants to do a story about transgenderism, maybe it should be about fish a la Sherman’s Lagoon. Some species of fish transition from one gender to the other under certain circumstances, and male seahorses carry the young.
Well that would give readers the impression that sex and gender were the same thing, which they aren’t.
Meaning these fish actually metamorphize from one set of genitals to the other.
Except that gender isn’t biological like sex. Genders are socially constructed categories. Switching categories is nothing like regrowing a limb.
That claim is nothing but bullshit, and has been medically proven as being bullshit. How? Gender reassignment surgery. Male-to-female and female-to-male. I don’t see anything nervous or concerned about her expression in the last panel…
And I’m on the bloody spectrum; I’m not super good at that and it’s still obvious she’s just plain ol’ excited to be discussing boy parts.
At least she started in the sonic range.
I’m waiting for benni to decide he must be a father a dozen times over from all the sex he has had….
So far so good, but I wonder how they’ll react that book that Colin and Flora found?
Probably with amused giggles, curiosity, wonder, etc.
I predict that, within a few pages, the subject of boners is going to come up, with at least some of the kits wondering just how big they can get. I don’t see any good coming out of making a victim sit down with his abuser. At least not for the victim.
Sure, it might help drive home that what Tali did was wrong, but using Hunter as a prop for a life lesson for Tali would be a slap in the face.
He already stated he didn’t like her, and for good cause. I really hope Colin doesn’t let Hunter get used like that.
Heh, Bennie’s question… Probably worried about Talitha now.
