Jesus, I can’t get over those ribs on him. Just how little does someone have to eat where they’re almost a teenager and you can be able to play their skeleton like a xylophone?
I really hope that by the end of this comic he’s a LOT better off. Decent meals every day, a good family, and lots of therapy. I remember seeing how he was acting when this comic began, and I have this mindset of “Once a bully, always a bully.”
Well, technically you don’t have to be ill-fed or malnourished. I had a kid in my Junior High (8th grade) who looked like a skeleton. (he was also 6′ tall at 13, but that was something else altogether.
Not that I doubt Benni is malnourished, just that it doesn’t *have* to be because of that.

Post-traumatic stress disorder: it can warp one’s mind.
Growing up PTSD made me think a lot of my abuse was normal, mind you it wasn’t sexual unless being locked out until you pee yourself because not able to get to bathroom counts as sexual. But I normalized it so much I was told don’t talk about it, and when I finally did, I became a buzzkill, I’d bring up a thing like “I remember stealing just to have this” and the mood would shatter and I’d be told never again. You expect it, even ten years later, you expect it to be how it was NORMALIZED to you,… Read more »
When will someone explain to Benni that when someone does something for you out of kindness, you do not have to repay them with sex? I think Kaleb will be the one to do that.
Yeah, this is the worst sort of conditioning, and really makes me wonder how old Benni was when the abuse began. That’s something that I’m curious about and dreading an answer to. But it would certainly explain a great deal of the poor kid’s behavior and interactions with others.
IIRC he said he was six when he started “working” for his Dad. That doesn’t mean that’s when the sex started, but it’s a fair indicator that it became regular after that.
The sex began at that point, but I think general abuse began much sooner given how stellar a character Benni’s father is. The elder Subak is striking me as the most deplorable and depraved of characters…
While keeping in mind that the vast majority of abusers were themselves abused, I’d agree with you there…
It’s possible that age six was just when Subak began *sharing* Benni.
Colin experimenting with guys? In reality, when I went to college, I never did sexual experimentation of any sort, and in fact while there was sex, it was between people in already established relationships. Even a lot of self-proclaimed homosexuals are not necessarily interested in buttsex. I myself even hate proctological exams.
About the only homosexual experience I had was when I was sitting on the toilet when my sister’s Basset hound came inside and stuck his nose into my business, and licked my business.
It’s possible Flora’s words haven’t sunken in yet simply because Flora is a woman, whereas likely all of Benni’s interactions with adults have involved males. It’s possible he can’t yet relate to Flora since she’s a woman. She’s literally unfamiliar territory for him in all sorts of ways.
Benni did mention when she was getting ready to relate her own history with him that he was unfamiliar with adult females and didn’t know how to ‘please’ them. That and I agree with your assessment that Flora is an unfamiliar element as the only female he’s really had interactions with have been Talitha, and those most likely were directed by her or both their father’s.
Sam (the dog) was one who when growing up was sticking his nose into everything. He would mature and improve his behavior…but he did bond to me in the end, always wanting to be near me when I was around.
It depends on your major; some majors are easier than others and can be doen with only a minimal effrot, while other ones require a lot of work and study, which means you won’t be having much fun at all. Even majors with a regular course load can be difficult depeding on the class you’re taking.
Poor fella just has not been around social norm type people ever in his life.

I’m sort of uncomfortable with the way Colin is choosing to explain this. Orientation doesn’t (shouldn’t!) enter into the question, an adult having sex with a child (or anyone who can’t give meaningful consent) is just plain wrong. I understand this is a story about a difficult subject Colin probably isn’t well equipped to deal with, but….yeah, I think he’s taking the wrong direction here.
While homosexuality and pedophilia are not synonymous, in ancient times it was probably far more commonplace to have sex with children than with other adults of the same gender.
…which is why I feel “I’m not gay” is the wrong direction for Colin to take things here. “I’m not going to use my position of trust and power to hurt you” is more important in this situation than “I’m not attracted to other boys.”
In the heat of the moment after an awkward situation, things don’t always come out the way you want them to, but the main thing for Colin to get across to Benni is “I like you, but not in that way,” while at the same time trying to deduce WHY Benni would do such a thing. Keep in mind that Colin is still unaware of the extent of Benni’s abuse, so Colin has to piece together what’s going on simply from observation.
Colin says that he has zero interest in sex with kits because he doesn’t like the idea of prison. That’s just a damn scary answer. The correct answer to that question is that he objects to sex with kits because it is immoral. Whether for cultural or religious reasons, I think most average people would agree that sex with minors is objectionable beyond the mere scope of the law. At least, I certainly hope so.
I think he phrased it that way to try and end any thought that he might give in. Usually ‘it’s illegal!’ is enough to stop discussion of ‘aww, come on, let’s do this!’ for any sort of thing that’s illegal. Usually.

I wonder if anybody else has made the connection from the last panel.
Not only does Benni expect to have to pay for his food and such with sex, but he automatically expects adults to Lie.

A-yup. A very, very loooooong way to go….. 😕

Pretty sure Flora already told him that, but I’ll have to go back through the stories to check.
I think so too but it might not have sunk in yet.

You didn’t need to tell us that.

Talk about convoluted…
Why are you replying to my comment? That isn’t what I was talking about.
Sam (the dog) was one who when growing up was sticking his nose into everything. He would mature and improve his behavior…but he did bond to me in the end, always wanting to be near me when I was around.
so college is real? a legendary land where you do everything and nothing at the same time?
No No No, you got it wrong. College is where you have fun for 4 years then spend the rest of your life paying it off.
