Not exaggerated, sadly. The foster system, in the USA, is shit. Too many do it just for a paycheck, and the fucking church of Regan thinks people who try and get on disability or need food stamps are trying to game the system.
Sadly there are. Especially in this day and age where people actually see going to work as a shameful and will outright reject $20 an hour starting salaries and benefits, because people just simply refuse to work.
I feel like the kind of people you’re talking don’t represent the majority of people. I’d jump at a job that started at that much an hour and plenty of other people would, too.
Dunno about the US but in my country, which is a nordic welfare state and thus has a way more expansive welfare system, less than 1% of the welfare given out ends up being fraudulant, so ya know, dont judge the majority based on the minority, just cause that less than 1% exists the system isnt broken, it’s still helping over 99% of people
I am reminded of the Barney Fife picture where his motto is, “Not much gets past me!” Either fraud is underreported or you have a better way of tracking, though I tend to lean toward the former.
In point of fact the percentage of actual Welfare fraud in the US is far lower than anyone would ever expect.
Seventeen different US states passed laws requiring investigation of fraud and made *severe* penalties for engaging in it.
Most of the spent several *millions* of dollars in order to interdict a few tens of thousands in welfare fraud. Florida in particular spent $68,000,000 to sniff out $360,000 in fraudulent payments.
Even if that was the case and not just conservative fear-mongering, so fucking what? How is a tiny minority (even in the most grossly inflated estimates it is never more than that) gaming the system grounds for fucking over the vast majority who really do need help?
Conservative fear-mongering? You mean like how it turned out that the Soviet Union really was trying to take over the world and turn Central America into a military base despite the liberals denying it? Or that “tac cuts for the rich” really benefit the entire economy? Or that Islamism being the new Naziism isn’t phobia, it’s reality?
If you want fear-mongering, try all the fuss over supposed “climate change” which has proven to be as fake as the Piltdown Man. Reality sucks dunnit?
THANK YOU. The only fear-mongering over BS is on the Left. People concerned with REAL issues (and pointing out the party actively CAUSING them) are the opposition, and are constantly silenced and ridiculed.
I’m a veteran of foster/adoption, believe me I know. And the US is actually one of the better countries out there and still falls quite short. There are others that are far, far worse.
If anything my comment is about Beth-Anne’s resilience and that her experiences haven’t turned her into a psychotic murk machine.
Wait, so Jestan is also a foster child? I always figured he was the favored biological son of the family based on what Beth Anne said. But now I’m wondering what kind of experiences Jestan had and if they shaped him into the person he is. The stuff Beth Anne is saying is sad but not surprising to me; I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about foster care.
He was talking about how his sisters chest used to be… I still think it might have been in reference to Beth-Ann… Mainly because in reference to Kaleb referring to Bennie as his brother immediately and without hesitation even when they were still slightly at odds early on, I suspect the lack of interspecies breeding has HEAVILY pushed the meaning of family to be more flexible and inclusive than just genetics.
There are enough instances of real life animal mothers who adopt those that they did not give birth to. No reason it would not happen in this world.

His…thing?! I don’t think we can wait for the next generation to fix this. There HAS to be a way we can fix, or at least improve the system. Just like Edison improved the lightbulb.
Edison didn’t invent the light bulb as is commonly believed, he simply came up with one that lasted long enough to be practical. But he simply used trial and error rather than use complicated mathematics and advanced knowledge of physics to finally achieve his goal.
You can say the same thing about the Wright Brothers and their powered flying machine.
After doing a lot of research for a History paper, I came to the conclusion that Wilbur and Orville basically lucked into their solution.. as bicycle mechanics, they certainly didn’t have the scientific know-how to do what they did… and pretty close to *everybody* and their Uncle was trying to figure the problem out at the time.
A lot of the failure is due to lack of concern instilled into the community because:
“The government will handle it.”
That mentality is destructive and teaches people to lack empathy towards those in trouble resulting in an over-stressed system suffering from a lack of resources and limited options on what to do with the “problems”.

Jeebus. 😥

Too true unfortunately. It’s sad that there’s just too many kids drowning themselves with anti depressants because their lives were so shitty.
There are plenty of people who do just that.
Sadly there are. Especially in this day and age where people actually see going to work as a shameful and will outright reject $20 an hour starting salaries and benefits, because people just simply refuse to work.

But even more than that: We know now that Jestan wasn’t referring to BethAnn when he talked about doing his sister.
You might be right except for one thing: Jestan said that (“Just like my sister’s used to be”) while BethAnn was *sitting right next to him*.
In context it makes no sense.

There’s something to be said for dumb luck.
Science doesn’t work in a vacuum. Plenty of other people came up with far more practical airplane designs soon afterward.
Absolutely. The point was, the ones who did it *first* did so largely by luck, since they simply didn’t have the science.
The last picture reminds me of this: Tallyho–0010 | R. H. Junior Webcomics (rhjunior.com)
Damn. Kid needs something more than pills in that comic… 😳
Believe it or not, furries such as Taurin Fox, Foxonian, and LeafDog loved this comic strip.
People change after 21 years. Why mention outside artists?
Some people never change. The artists I mentioned are all fussbudgets.
That still doesn’t really answer my question, but sure?
Eek. And ick.

People have their own problems. Why do they pay taxes if the government cannot handle what they are expected to do?
