Actually “dad as bumbling fool” sitcoms date from before that, such as in “The Munsters” or “The Flintstones” or “The Honeymooners” (the latter without children though). “The Simpsons” simply reused this trope. “I love Lucy” was the same thing with the wife doing the bumbling instead.
The trope is older than the time period I mentioned, yes… But in your earlier examples, they weren’t the *only* version that was presented on TV.
After shows like The Waltons and Little House ended, Fathers were just never positive figures. Not even Bill Cosby on the Cosby Show, touted by many as a “perfect father”.
These are such turbulent developments for all of them, that I don’t really blame Colin going with the flow and allowing letting the boys be naked to let them be more relaxed and comfortable, in regards to Benni, and joining them in communion to set an example of restraint and boundaries. If anything, it really pushed the lesson of boundaries forward for all of them. I know the stances are that Flora is the most experienced with nudism and putting down the learning boundaries for Tali and Tanya is the learning experience for them. At the same time, it wasn’t… Read more »

Mmmm, bacon sandwich….
Girls don’t always think things through properly either, Flora!
so true! 😀
But oh, are we males SO much more prone to it… Yay testosterone.
Kind of a sexist lesson to teach a child, Flora…
It’s the nineties in this comic, this was par for course.
Par for the course doesn’t really excuse it.
Like in the 80s and 90s literally EVERY TV Dad was a bumbling fool and Mom had to come along and clean up his messes from dealing with everybody else.
We got such HORRIBLE messages about Fathers from Television… 9_9
The sad thing is, in many cases we still do.

Yeah, I thought she was better than that.
Soo, the girls can be naked in Flora’s house, but the boys can’t be naked in Colin’s house when it’s just the boys??? I’m sorry what? 🤔
i think she was definitely angrier that he got naked *with* the children.
You got it slug.
Did anybody else notice that in the last panel, Benni looks particularly morose in the background?
I always worry about Benni.
That’s not Benni, that’s the television screen. Benni isn’t even in the room.
Check again. The view angle changes between the last two panels, and Benni and Tali are both on the couch, by Panel 1.
You’re right, it is Benni on the couch.
