Wise words Flora, and Colin, take note. IF Flora is going to be your future mate (and it sure looks like it), you are going to have to be more open in a reasonable way and to teach the kits the right and wrongs of sex, sibling rivalry, AND learning when to give and when to be firm on rules.
I can just see it now, with Tali’ wanting to play with Colin’s junk, much to his discomfort, and he has to physically take her hand off of said junk, and gently but firmly remind her that she shouldn’t be doing that, either with someone his age, or without first asking and getting consent.
Most sex ed courses are pretty mundane actually; it’d literally just how the reproductive systems work, how pregnancy works, and then stuff like STIs, contraception, and all that jazz
There are certain topics that simply do not belong in sex ed courses, especially if the courses are being given at the kindergarten and first grade levels.
We got taught sex ed in a Lutheran grade school, probably in fourth grade, and it was basically about what organs males and females had.
Yes, there are creatures that change genders naturally such as clownfish, but as one poster pointed out in the past, changing them is an adult decision!
And subjects like proper masturbation technique, gender identity and its relationship to sexual intercourse, and sexual positions and/or acts, just to name a few, have no place being taught to anyone at the kindergarten or first grade levels. Nobody that young needs that kind of information when they’re still trying to learn how to read and do basic math.
Colin and Flora already have kits of their own. If genetics works in this world the way that it does in our own, it will be impossible for them to produce viable offspring. Perhaps that is why Flora’s religion is so opposed to mixed-species marriage: you can’t “go forth and multiply” if your mate isn’t your species. That’s the way I’ve approached the issue in my own stories. There are advantages, though, since sex with someone of a different species is the perfect form of contraception.
I remember Campion saying that there cannot be offspring between various species. We can assume that marriage between people of different species would be tolerated for reasons such as a person has a child already and needs help to raise it.
Your memory is probably better than mine, Tom, so I’ll take your word about what Campion said. We don’t have a large sample size yet in this story, so we don’t know yet how hard this couple is pushing their society’s norms. But as it does in our world, I’d expect the tolerance level for mixed marriages to vary from religion to religion, country to country, and perhaps even species to species. If Flora’s church refuses to marry her and Colin, they might find another, more progressive church that is willing to do so. Or they might have to fall… Read more »
Even an unprogressive church can allow for someone who has a child already and needs to marry someone to support them. It’s not as if Flora and Colin are young people who don’t know better.
Plus if interspecies hybrids existed in this scenario by now we would have heard about them. I don’t think Zig Zag (Max Black Rabbit’s tiger/skunk hybrid) will appear in this story.
Looking at the story so far, it seems like society’s opinions of mixed marriages differ; The Farcians appear to look down on it and I remember Munch making a big deal over Paz liking Tanya even though she’s not a cat. On the other hand, when Tanya is in the hospital, one of the orderly assumed Flora was Tanya’s mother/stepmother and didn’t seem to think badly of it, and Tanya doesn’t seem to care about the difference between her and Kalen’s species. Essentially, it’s like how in the real world some people don’t like interracial marriages but others are fine… Read more »
This isn’t Kevin and Kell, and there’s no sentient creatures eating each other. Also we don’t see the animal characters do “animal” things such as tail wagging.

And we finally learn the name of Flora’s deceased husband. I like it.

So much information to unpack in this week’s page. First and foremost, the fact that what Whistlestop didn’t drive Flora’s love of the hippie life out of her, but rather the death of her husband. Frankly I’d classify that as the power of love right there, with the pain of loss being the only thing that could really subdue her, even temporarily. This gives a lot of hope that Tanya will be just fine and overcome what happened to her without years of effort. Secondly, Colin, pay close attention. What Flora is suggesting is just short of a marriage proposal.… Read more »
Flora’s story is something that happens a lot in the world. A person who’s vulnerable and in a time of need and so they turn to religion because they’re hoping it will give them the support/answers they need. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and in Flora’s case, it seems like she’d be better off with the Faricans. And I absolutely agree with her last statement, she and Colin need to create an environment where their kids can learn about these things in positive and responsible way and together they can do that. I just hope all tehe other stuff… Read more »
Honestly, I think a lot of society’s hangups stem from people feeling vulnerable in a time of need and desperately looking for anything to give them a sense of belonging. They’ll hold onto that sense of belonging so strongly, guard it so fiercely, they’ll turn a blind eye to everything except maintaining that sense of belonging.

Now we have a name for her religious sect.
I’ve just been calling them the Mannites. 😉
Bonus points for anybody who gets the reference. 😀
If everyone is honest, sex education doesn’t need to be some mystical freak show.

I know, right? Keep the kinky shit out of the teachings.

What is Kinky? We need a definition now!
Well there’s this for starters:

Sounds like California schools are pretty pog.
It’s about time that Flora suggested being mates. But will society accept a mix marriage?
Predator and prey, living together.
So what’s for dinner?
Not sure, but I know what’s for dessert.
Bunners
My response to the punchline? A stack of thin moist pillows!
My question is, if they have kits, what will they be?
Foxes? Rabbits? Roxes? Fabbits?
