Actually, the big surprise is that Ray even had contact with the rest of his relatives, even if they never suspected the truth about him. There would have been the danger that Talitha might have accidentally spilled the beans.
No, not really. My parents to this day have no idea what my aunt’s husband did with his children and grandchildren. Folks like Ray are masters of doublethink and compartmentalization.

I could just be reading it wrong, but Griff’s end of the conversation almost makes it sound like Maw-Maw knew that Ray was engaged in criminal activity, just not what sort was actually going on. It also sounds like Maw-Maw needs to remind Griff to keep his hands off Tali, like he’d actually forget she’s just a kid.
Makes me wonder just how screwed up this family actually is.
The real surprise here is that Ray actually *owned* a house to sell…
He was apparently completely willing to abandon it when he decided to flee with Tali.
Not that it’s important to the overall story, but it’s very likely that Griff & Maw-Maw will have a good deal if difficulty selling his house if they don’t have Title to it. 😉
Abandoning it? I bought mine from a retired man who had already moved to Florida and the transaction was handled by telephone. No reason Ray couldn’t have done the same and asked his relatives to take the things out if the police had not caught up with him.
In any case, Ray should be very willing to sell the house-he would need the funds to pay his lawyers.

More that Maw-Maw was saying she’s just a kit and wouldn’t initiate anything and doesn’t know about her boundary crossing issues
